S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING MAY 18,
2008 AS A WORLDWIDE NEIGHBOR DAY TO "JOIN HANDS 4 LOVE"

WHEREAS,
On May 18, 2008, at one o’clock p.m., all Americans are asked to “Join
Hands
4 Love” in a nationwide effort to participate in Neighbor Day, which is
celebrated
annually
on the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend; and
WHEREAS,
The noble mission of this day is to bring this nation together for love of
neighbor
in order to protect our very existence; and
WHEREAS,
By participating in “Join Hands 4 Love”, Rhode Islanders would set a
precedent
for the rest of the nation to celebrate Neighbor Day, which was initiated in
1993 in
Westerly,
Rhode Island. In 1994, the State of Rhode Island, the Boys’ Nation, the United
Nations
and
the Congressional Record in Washington, D.C. all joined in the celebration of
this day; and
WHEREAS,
These few minutes of joining hands symbolize a binding together of Love,
Peace
and Unity in the face of hate crimes and war. With a positive effort on all our
parts, and by
standing
together no matter where we are or who we are, we as a people can overcome
hate,
prejudice,
discrimination and fear of one another; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby
celebrates “Join Hands 4 Love” as a worldwide Neighbor Day effort to promote
and
encourage
citizens to join hands for the love of our neighbors at one o’clock p.m. on May
18,
2008;
and be it further
RESOLVED,
That this Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
duly certified copies of this resolution to all City and Town Councils in the
State of
Rhode
Island, the Rhode Island Congressional delegation, and the United Nations.
