H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CONDUCT A STUDY ON THE FINANCING, ORGANIZATION, AND EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island's public schools and students benefit from a cadre of teachers

who demonstrate subject area expertise and commitment to professional growth; and

     WHEREAS, Teacher professional development provides teachers with the opportunity to

explore and integrate high quality instructional methods into their classroom practice; and

     WHEREAS, Multiple entities within the State, including the Rhode Island department of

education, individual school districts, institutions of higher education, regional education

collaboratives, and others develop and offer teacher professional development; and

     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives strives to ensure that the taxpayer dollars

which support teacher professional development are optimally spent; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Rhode Island department of education

conduct a study that examines the financing, organization, and effectiveness of teacher

professional development, identifies opportunities for improvement, and issues recommendations

for strengthening teacher professional development in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this House requests that said study shall be completed and a report

provided to the Speaker of the House on or before June 1, 2009; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Rhode Island

department of education.
