R E S O L U T I O N
RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTING THE DIRECTOR OF THE RHODE ISLAND
DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION TO FULLY FUND AND IMPLEMENT THE ROUTE 2/DIVISION STREET
"HIGH HAZARD INTERSECTION" PROJECT

WHEREAS,
In 2004, the East Greenwich Town Council and Planning Board approved a
rezoning
request in order to attract the world headquarters of Brooks Drugs. The State
Economic
Development
Corporation as well as the developer and property owner worked collaboratively
to
insure
the project’s success; and
WHEREAS,
As part of the preparation for the project, a traffic study was prepared which
determined
that significant improvements to the intersection of Route 2 and Division
Street were
needed
in order to facilitate current and future increased traffic flow through the
intersection; and
WHEREAS,
The State, through RIDOT’s Chief Engineer at the time, indicated
improvements
would be made to Division Street, East of Route 2, because it was determined to
be
an ongoing “High Hazard Intersection”; and
WHEREAS,
In November of 2004, the Town of East Greenwich was informed by the
RIDOT
Chief Engineer that, “We anticipate that the project will be advertised for
construction in
late
fall/early winter in 2005, and construction will begin in early Spring 2006”;
and
WHEREAS,
To date there has been no movement on the Route 2/Division Street "High
Hazard
Intersection" Project; and
WHEREAS,
The intersection at the center of the project abuts the East Greenwich and
Warwick
town lines, and services these two communities as well as the Town of West
Warwick;
and
WHEREAS,
The Council of the Town of East Greenwich in conjunction with the Mayor
of
the City of Warwick and the Town Council of West Warwick have all categorically
issued
support
for and the grave need to address, this long overdo highly hazardous
intersection; now,
therefore
be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby urges the Director of the Department of Transportation to
fully
fund
and implement the Route 2/ Division Street "High Hazard Intersection"
Project; and be it
further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Department of
Transportation.
