HONORING ALAN V.
SOKOLOW ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE EASTERN
REGION OFFICE OF THE COUNCIL OF STATE GOVERNMENTS

WHEREAS,
Alan V. Sokolow was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 20th of
1942.
He attended elementary and high school in Brooklyn, and attained his Bachelor’s
degree in
Political
Science in June of 1964. Alan continued his education, attending graduate
school at the
Maxwell
School of Public Policy at Syracuse University, where he earned a Master of
Public
Administration
degree; and
WHEREAS,
In 1967, Alan began his professional career with the Council of State
Governments’
Eastern Regional Conference (CSG/ERC) as a Field Representative. In 1972, he
was
promoted to the position of Director of the CSG Eastern Office; and
WHEREAS,
Over the course of the past four decades, Rhode Island and the states of the
eastern
region have been the beneficiaries of the wisdom, integrity and abiding
dedication to
excellence
that Alan Sokolow has always brought to his work at CSG, and along the way, he
has
earned
the unqualified admiration and respect of his fellow workers as well as state
officials; and
WHEREAS,
In addition to his responsibilities at CSG/ERC, Alan is happily married and
has
two grown daughters. He is also an avid Mets fan, with an extensive baseball
memorabilia
collection
that he had proudly displayed in his office; and
WHEREAS,
Alan also helped to establish the National Hispanic Caucus of State
Legislatures
(NHCSL) assisting the group with organizational matters and serving as the
Interim
Director
until the position was permanently filled. He was honored by NHCSL with a
“Special
Recognition
Award” for his extraordinary efforts; and
WHEREAS,
Alan Sokolow’s retirement will be a huge loss to both the General
Assembly
and the executive branch of government in Rhode Island, as well as the Eastern
Regional
Conference of the Council of State Governments. His expertise and knowledge
have
been
pivotal to a myriad of issues in our Ocean State, and he will be greatly
missed; now,
therefore
be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby honors and thanks Alan V. Sokolow for more than four decades
of
outstanding
service to Rhode Island and the states of the Council of State Governments’
eastern
region;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and
directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to Alan V. Sokolow.
