S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO AUTHORIZE AIRLINE PASSENGERS RIGHTS LEGISLATION

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators Raptakis, C Levesque, McCaffrey, Maselli, and Blais

     WHEREAS, All to often, the flying public has endured episodes of protracted strandings

on the tarmac prior to takeoff or after landing, and a failure to provide even basic levels of

consumer service from many of our nation’s commercial airlines; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, passenger complaints arising from mishandling and lost

baggage, and delays and cancellations of flights, to name but a few occurrences, deserve to be

heard and responded to in a fair, consistent and timely manner by airline industry representatives;

and

     WHEREAS, It is a fundamental duty of government to protect its citizens from these

incessant, traumatic and often preventable situations, and propose standards and procedures for

the timely and reasonable conduct of major airlines towards consumers; and

     WHEREAS, Currently S. 1300, the “Aviation Investment and Modernization Act (FAA

Reauthorization) and a related bill H.R. 2881 are before Congress. These bills address many of

the problems plaguing airline consumers; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby supports the need for immediate action and calls upon the United States Congress to

approve S. 1300 and H.R. 2881, in order to secure airline passengers rights; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation,

The Honorable Chairs of the United States House and Senate Transportation Committees, the

Executive Director of the Aviation Consumer Action Project, and the Executive Director of the

Coalition for an Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights.
