S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING DR. JORGE ALVAREZ ON THE RENAMING OF ADELAIDE HIGH

SCHOOL IN HIS HONOR AND PROCLAIMING JUNE 12TH, 2008 TO BE "DR. JORGE

ALVAREZ DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Jorge Alvarez emigrated from Cuba as a young man. He had already

attained his Ph.D. in math and the physical sciences from Havana University and was ready to

commit his determination and love of education to a new life in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, Upon arriving in the United States, Dr. Alvarez returned to school. He

attained a Master of Arts in Teaching (Mathematics) from Bridgewater State College, a Master of

Computer Science School of Electrical Engineers (Thesis Pending) from Northeastern University,

and a Master of Arts Education in School Administration from Rhode Island College; and

     WHEREAS, In 1979, Dr. Alvarez was hired to teach bilingual math and science at

Central High School. Over the next fifteen years, he pioneered various approaches to improving

education in the urban school setting, and, in 1994, was named Assistant Principal at Central.

From 1997 until his retirement in 2000, Dr. Alvarez was Principal of the Oliver Hazard Perry

Middle School; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Alvarez provided exceptional leadership within the Providence School

Department and the community, never shying away from donating his energies and time to a

myriad of groups including: Big Brothers, the Center for Hispanic Policy and Advocacy and the

NAACP; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Jorge Alvarez's enduring belief in providing opportunities

and programs that would help children and adults alike to learn and develop, and to grow

educationally, resulted in his membership on numerous boards and commissions, including

serving as President of the Hispanic Organization of Providence Educators, a board member of

Providence Community Action Program, and Treasurer of the Hispanic Council for the Arts and

Literature of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, The accomplishments of Dr. Alvarez's life thus far have earned him the

unqualified admiration and respect of the citizens of the City of Providence as well as the entire

State of Rhode Island. He has provided many young people with the opportunity to follow their

dreams, and has truly enriched the lives of all who have had the good fortune to come into contact

with him; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby recognizes and salutes the vast contributions Dr. Jorge Alvarez has bestowed upon the

students and citizenry of the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island, and we applaud

the dedication of the Jorge Alvarez High School in his honor; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby proclaims June 12th of 2008 to be “Dr. Jorge

Alvarez Day” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified of this resolution to Dr. Jorge Alvarez.
