S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators Bates, Gallo, Algiere, McBurney, and Lanzi

     WHEREAS, Home should be a place of warmth, unconditional love, and tranquility; and

     WHEREAS, The impact of domestic violence is wide ranging, directly affecting

individuals and society as a whole, here in this community, throughout the United States, and the

world; and

     WHEREAS, The crime of domestic violence is not confined to any group of people, but

crosses all economic, racial and social segments of our society; and

     WHEREAS, Men and women alike must recognize the scope of this social problem and

work together to create a community that does not tolerate domestic violence; and

     WHEREAS, The most successful methodology to prevent domestic violence is a shared

commitment to ending the problem from every individual and community in Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, The most successful methodology to utilize the collective resources

committed to ending domestic violence in Rhode Island is through a coordinated community-

based response, involving a partnership with law enforcement agencies, courts, advocacy

programs, social service agencies, schools, the health care profession, employers and all Rhode

Island citizens; and

     WHEREAS, Domestic violence is not only a crime but a violation of a person’s basic

rights as a human being, and, as such, victims deserve our support, and all offenders need to be

held accountable; and

     WHEREAS, All citizens should become aware of domestic violence in all its aspects and

how it can be prevented, and become involved on the local level in supporting victims, and their

families in seeking safety and justice; and

     WHEREAS, Consistent with our tradition of neighborly concern for one another, sense of

fairness and justice, Rhode Island’s citizens are encouraged to report to law enforcement agencies

all suspected incidents of domestic violence; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the State of

Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the GFWC Bristol County Women’s Club.
