PROCLAIMING MARCH 19TH AS "OCEAN TIDES DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Introduced By: Representatives Carter, Lally, Giannini, Pacheco, and E Coderre

     Date Introduced: March 19, 2009

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides is an educational and residential program founded in 1975 to

meet the individual needs of at-risk boys in the state of Rhode Island, and has served more than

1,750 young men; and

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides believes each individual who comes to their program is worthy

of respect, needful care, and capable of success through everyday experiences and interactions in

a highly structured program; and

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides has been a cost-effective program flexible enough to meet the

coordinated treatment needs of each young man and his family. The components of the program

– Group Living, Education, Extensions, and Social Services – are designed to implement a

treatment plan for each young man and his family in such a way that the needs of the total person

may be addressed in a personal, well-programmed and pragmatic fashion; and

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides provides a blend of direction, correction, negation and

affirmation so that each young man may re-enter his community at peace, and in stages that

provide the necessary support while developing self-sufficiency; and

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and

Colleges, and in each of the past five years, on average, more than 15 boys have earned their high

school diploma from Ocean Tides. Without the benefit of this program they would not be high

school graduates; and

WHEREAS, Ocean Tides has an outstanding success rate. Eighty percent of Ocean

Tides' students who complete the program do not get in trouble again; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby applauds the efforts, and supports the goals of Ocean Tides Day,

an event sponsored by Ocean Tides and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. We furthermore

congratulate the combined efforts of the Ocean Tides Board of Trustees, the De La Salle

Christian Brothers, the administrators, teachers, social service counselors, youth care workers,

office staff, support staff, and many friends and benefactors for their ongoing efforts to help the

young men and their families served by Ocean Tides to increase their prospects for long-term

happiness and fulfillment; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Brother Brendan Gerrity, FSC, President and
