S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING MAY 15, 2009 AS "NATIONAL POLICE MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE

WEEK OF MAY 10 - 16 AS "NATIONAL POLICE WEEK"

     WHEREAS, In memory of those police officers who have so selflessly died or been

disabled in the line of duty, the State of Rhode Island annually celebrates May 15th as "National

Police Memorial Day" and the week containing May 15th as "National Police Week"; and

     WHEREAS, First signed into law nationally in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and

enacted in the Rhode Island General Laws in 1966, President Bill Clinton expanded the

recognition in 1994, directing all United States flags to be displayed at half-mast on all

government buildings on May 15th; and

     WHEREAS, Police officers in the State of Rhode Island and across America work

diligently on behalf of the people, without regard to the peril or hazard they face each and every

day as they safeguard our lives, our rights and freedoms, and our property. It is eminently

important to recognize and thank these noble and courageous individuals; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby recognizes and celebrates May 15, 2009 as "National Police Memorial Day" and the week

of (May 10th through the 16th) as "National Police Week"; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate offers our sincere condolences to the families and friends

of the valiant and heroic police officers who have given their lives or have been disabled in the

performance of their duty in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate respectfully requests that the Governor direct all flags in

the state to be lowered to half-mast on this day of solemn remembrance and invites all Rhode

Island communities and citizenry to join in observing said day with appropriate ceremonies and

activities; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Donald Carcieri, Governor of the

State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, the Rhode Island Director of Administration,

the Rhode Island State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and the Rhode Island International

Brotherhood of Police Officers.
