J O I N T  R E S O L U T I O N

REINSTATING, EXTENDING, AND AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE KARLA HARRY COMMISSION ON LIBRARIES IN RHODE ISLAND

     RESOLVED, That the special legislative commission created by resolution No. 306

passed by the General Assembly at its January session, A.D. 2004, and approved June 8, 2004

entitled “Joint Resolution Creating a Special Legislative Commission To Study The Current

Strengths and Weaknesses of Library Services in the State of Rhode Island” and as amended by

resolution No. 359 passed by the General Assembly at its January Session, A.D. 2006, and

approved June 23, 2006 entitled “Joint Resolution Reinstating and Extending the Commission

Life and Amending the Membership of the Special Legislative Commission to Study the Current

Strengths and Weaknesses of Library Services in the State of Rhode Island” and as amended by

resolution No. 280 passed by the General Assembly at its January session, A.D. 2007, and

approved May 22, 2007 entitled “Joint Resolution Extending the Reporting and Expiration Dates

and Amending the Special Legislative Commission to Study the Current Strengths and

Weaknesses of Library Services in the State of Rhode Island” is hereby reinstated and the same

members are hereby reappointed, and it is authorized to continue its study and make a report to

the General Assembly on or before June 2, 2009 and said commission shall expire on June 2,

2011; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the composition of said commission is hereby amended to consist of

twenty-three (23) members: three (3) of whom shall be members of the House of Representatives,

not more than two (2) from the same political party, to be appointed by the Speaker of the House;

three (3) of whom shall be members of the Senate, not more than two (2) from the same political

party, to be appointed by the President of the Senate; two (2) of whom shall be members of the

general public, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a

representative from a large public library, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee;

one of whom shall be a representative from a medium-size public library, to be appointed by the

LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from a small public

library, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a

representative from an academic library at a public institution of higher learning, to be appointed

by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from an academic

library at a private institution of higher education, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering

Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from a hospital library, to be appointed by the

LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from a special library, to

be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from

a government or institutional library, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one

of whom shall be a representative from an elementary school library, to be appointed by the

LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a representative from a secondary school

library, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a

representative from the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Library and Information

Services (URI/GSLIS), to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom

shall be a representative of Library Services from the Office of Library & Information Services

(OLIS), to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; one of whom shall be a

representative from the state law library; and two (2) of whom shall be members of the general

public, to be appointed by the LibFutures Steering Committee; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the time for reporting and date of expiration authorized by resolution

No. 306 and passed by the General Assembly at its January session, A.D. 2004, and approved

June 8, 2004, and as amended by resolution No. 359 passed by the General Assembly at its

January Session, A.D. 2006, and approved June 23, 2006, and as amended by resolution No. 280

passed by the General Assembly at its January session, A.D. 2007, and approved May 22, 2007

be and the same are hereby rescinded.
