S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS KEITH MAINE

AND MATTHEW MCDERMOTT

     Introduced By: Senators Sosnowski, Sheehan, and Maher

     Date Introduced: February 11, 2010

     WHEREAS, Many people go through their life without any personal contact with a

potential life or death situation, without a defining moment that turns an ordinary person into a

hero. Members of Rhode Island’s fire departments face such challenges each and every week;

and

     WHEREAS, The townspeople of South Kingstown and neighboring communities have

witnessed, benefited, and enjoyed peace of mind because Keith Maine and Matthew McDermott

have been on duty as volunteer firefighters with South Kingstown Forest Fire Station 3 of the

Union Fire District in South Kingstown; and

     WHEREAS, In the early morning hours of February 23, 2009, Firefighters Maine and

McDermott were returning from a concert at the Ryan Center when they spotted flames and

smoke coming from the second floor of 152 A High Street; and

      WHEREAS, Firefighters Maine and McDermott immediately called 911 and then

pounded on the back walls of the building in order to alert the occupants in the building. Three

residents jumped from a second floor window to escape flames while the officers helped to break

their fall; and

     WHEREAS, Devotion and service to the community have been just a way of life for

these two gentlemen. They have consistently demonstrated that no goal is too vast and no

amount of effort too great to put forth in service to their fellow man. Their heroic actions are

eminently worthy of our acknowledgement and our gratitude; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby recognizes and applauds Volunteer Firefighters Keith Maine and Matthew McDermott.

We wish them continued good health, much happiness, and success in all their future endeavors;

and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mr. Keith Maine and Mr. Matthew McDermott.
