S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING DR. THOMAS COBB

     WHEREAS, To the very good fortune of many Rhode Island students, Dr. Thomas Cobb

teaches creative writing and literature at Rhode Island College. As a professor, he has had

tremendous influence over the paths taken by many young people, but as a writer, he has

achieved an extraordinary career that has earned him acclaim not only in Rhode Island, but

nationally, as well; and  

     WHEREAS, Quickly becoming a legend in the entertainment business, “Crazy Heart,”

the film based on the first novel written by Professor Cobb, has given audiences across the

country moments of amusement, moments of pause, and compelling emotions that linger long

after the film ends; and  

     WHEREAS, Critically acclaimed, the movie quickly landed two Golden Globe

nominations and has been nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor, Best Supporting

Actor, and Best Song. Professor Cobb was one of five finalists for the University of Southern

California’s Scripter Awards, which honors the author of an original work; and

     WHEREAS, First published in 1987, Harper Collins republished Crazy Heart on

February 2nd of 2010. Professor Cobb also authored “Shavetail,” which won the Spur Award in

2008 for best western novel over 90,000 words from the Western Writers of America, and was

selected as a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters Jesse Jones Award for best book of fiction

in 2008; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Professor Cobb is the author of “Acts of Contrition,” a

collection of short stories, and his fourth book, “Blood in Their Eyes,” which is set to be

published in the spring of 2010; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Cobb is eminently deserving of the accolades and regard he has been

afforded and has fully distinguished himself as a person worthy of our recognition and

admiration; now, therefore be it  

     RESOLVED That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby honors Dr. Thomas Cobb and warmly congratulates him for the myriad awards he has

attained. We furthermore extend our deepest appreciation for his enlightening and entertaining

insights and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further 

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Thomas Cobb.
