H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING "EARTH HOUR" ON MARCH 27TH OF 2010 IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Melo, Ucci, Williams, M Rice, and Savage

     Date Introduced: February 11, 2010

 

 

     WHEREAS, On March 27th, people around the world are joining forces to help make a

difference in solving one of the most crucial issues of our time, the issue of climate change; and

     WHEREAS, By reducing our carbon footprint and decreasing our dependence on fossil

fuels, we will preserve our environment and increase economic prosperity for future generations;

and

      WHEREAS, The Earth Hour event began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, when two

million people switched off their lights, and continued in 2008, when more than fifty million

people around the globe participated; and

     WHEREAS, In 2009, nearly one billion people from 4,100 cities located in 87 countries

observed Earth Hour. This year, the hope is to reach more homes, more businesses, more cities,

and more countries, and to raise awareness about sustainability and the need for clean, renewable

energy alternatives; now, therefore be it

      RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby urges all Rhode Islanders to join in the celebration of “Earth Hour”

on March 27th of 2010 by turning off their lights from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. to help build a

brighter future for our world; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives hereby respectfully requests that the

Governor and the Director of the Department of Administration direct their staff to likewise join

in Earth Hour by turning off all non-essential lighting in state offices and buildings; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the United States chapter of the World Wildlife

Fund, the Governor of Rhode Island, and the Director of the Rhode Island Department of

Administration.
