S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF "EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN'S DAY," HELD ANNUALLY IN COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

     WHEREAS, Each year in March, “Extraordinary Women’s Day” is celebrated. This

event honors the vast and important contributions women make each and every day towards

building better communities and assisting those in need; and

     WHEREAS, “Extraordinary Women’s Day” is a celebration of women and brings

together women of different ethnic origins, creeds, and religions who have made significant

contributions in the areas of education, professional and business development, community

involvement, cultural enrichment, health, politics, and home care; and

     WHEREAS, The 2010 ceremony will bring Illinois State Senator Iris Y. Martinez to the

State of Rhode Island. The Honorable Iris Y. Martinez has served in the Illinois State Senate

since 2003 and represents a district on the North side of Chicago. Senator Martinez is a trailblazer

in many respects. She is the first woman elected to the Illinois State Senate and is the first Latina

to hold the position of Assistant Majority Leader. She is also the President of the National

Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NCHSL). She will be the keynote Speaker and will be

honored with the highest Extraordinary Women’s Day award; and

     WHEREAS, Other distinguished honorees in 2010 will be Doris Blanchard, Marilyn

Cepeda, Gertrude Jones, Loren Spears, Tamara Diaz, Eustakia Hernandez, Marisol Camilo, Ana

Novais, Adriana Vargas, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, and Extraordinary Woman for

the Future Petri Lopez; and

     WHEREAS, Distinguished guests will include Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts,

Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Elizabeth Burgos, Executive Director of the National

Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NCHSL), Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist,

Senator Juan M. Pichardo, and Representative Grace Diaz; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby celebrates the 10th Anniversary of “Extraordinary Women’s Day,” held annually in

commemoration of International Women’s Day; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution the Honorable Iris Y. Martinez.
