S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING DAVID M. DOOLEY AND PROCLAIMING APRIL 8, 2010, AS DAVID M. DOOLEY DAY IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The arrival of a new president is a landmark in the history of the University

of Rhode Island and a development that will have an impact on the community and the state for

years to come; and

     WHEREAS, Since his appointment in July of 2009, David M. Dooley has brought new

vision and leadership to the state's flagship university, to Rhode Island, and to higher education;

and

     WHEREAS, President Dooley guides the education of about 13,200 undergraduate and

3,150 graduate students with an approach that incorporates innovation, discovery, and

entrepreneurialism, efforts that are enthusiastically supported by nearly 2,600 dedicated faculty

and staff members; and

     WHEREAS, More than 43,000 URI alumni and their families live and work in Rhode

Island who, along with hundreds of thousands of other residents, understand the value and the

impact of Rhode Island's only public research university on the state, nation, and world; and

     WHEREAS, President Dooley has accepted an appointment to serve the state from the

board of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and has initiated new directions

for the University to become a strong partner in the renewal of the state's economy; and

     WHEREAS, On April 8, 2010, David M. Dooley will be installed in formal inaugural

ceremonies as the eleventh President of the University of Rhode Island, and on that day he will

present his vision for the University in 2010 and beyond, and share his thoughts on "Creating the

Future: The Role of the University in Transforming the World"; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby honors David M. Dooley and proclaims April 8, 2010, as "David M. Dooley Day" in the

State of Rhode Island. We furthermore call on all the citizens of the state to join in celebrating the

inauguration of the eleventh President of the University of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Dr. David M. Dooley.
