S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2010, AS "CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Designating the month April as “National Child Abuse Prevention Month”

is an annual tradition initiated in 1979 by former President Jimmy Carter; and

     WHEREAS, Child abuse is a national and local tragedy, with more than three million

reports of abuse and neglect nationally and with nearly 3,000 children reported annually in Rhode

Island as victims of abuse or neglect; and

     WHEREAS, Prevent Child Abuse - Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Child Abuse

Prevention Network, and the RI Family and Children’s Trust Fund are sponsoring several events

throughout the month of April to heighten public awareness of abuse and neglect in communities

around the state. The events will provide information and materials that support families to

prevent child maltreatment and celebrate people who work with and support children and

families; and

     WHEREAS, A statewide “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign has been launched

through the media, public schools, libraries, social service agencies, and businesses during the

month of April to celebrate the great potential of all children in Rhode Island and to bring

awareness to the need for strengthening all families with support and nurturing; and

     WHEREAS, The “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign includes the statewide planting of

Pinwheels Gardens” to celebrate community partnerships for strengthening the family and

protecting all children from abuse and neglect; and

     WHEREAS, Effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of the

partnerships created among social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations,

law enforcement agencies, and the business community; and

     WHEREAS, All Rhode Islanders have a role to play in building strong communities

where individuals, families, and children are valued and supported; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims the month of April, 2010, to be “Child Abuse Prevention Month” and urges all

applicable departments of the state as well as private agencies, religious organizations, medical

facilities, businesses, and all programs serving children and families to increase their participation

in efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby strengthening the communities in which we live; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby encourages the citizens of Rhode Island to become

more aware of the negative effects of child abuse and its prevention within our communities and

to become involved in efforts to support parents in raising their children in a safe and nurturing

environment; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Prevent Child Abuse – Rhode Island, the Rhode

Island Child Abuse Prevention Network, and the RI Family and Children’s Trust Fund.
