S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING "NATIONAL CANCER REGISTRARS WEEK" ON APRIL 12TH THROUGH THE 16TH IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Cancer Registrars are health care professionals and data management

experts who collect and maintain data on persons diagnosed with this devastating disease; and

     WHEREAS, The collected data assist physicians in monitoring treatment and aid

hospitals and epidemiologists in tracking cancer activity; and

      WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Statewide Cancer Registry operates under the auspices of

the Hospital Association of Rhode Island (HARI), which maintains the statewide cancer registry

(RICR); and

      WHEREAS, Funded by the Rhode Island Department of Health and the National

Program for Cancer Registries of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HARI not only

collects and maintains data related to Rhode Island’s cancer patient population, but also provides

support to hospital tumor registries and promotes the American College of Surgeons-approved

cancer programs in acute care hospitals throughout the state; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island has more than twenty-five cancer registrars operating across

the state. The information collected and compiled by these dedicated and determined

professionals is helping to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention efforts for many Rhode

Islanders; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby celebrates “National Cancer Registrars Week” on April 12th through April 16th, 2010. We

furthermore recognize and applaud the accomplishments of the Rhode Island Cancer Registry and

extend our gratitude for its efforts in fighting cancer in Rhode Island and across the nation; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Hospital Association of Rhode Island.
