H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING THE DEED TRANSFER OF THE POMHAM ROCKS LIGHTHOUSE TO THE AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION

     WHEREAS, Rhode Islanders are well aware of the majesty of our coastline and the

prominent place our shores have always occupied in the vibrancy of our state's economy and in

our quality of life; and

     WHEREAS, Many an Ocean State resident, as well as countless tourists, have enjoyed

visiting one or more of the twenty-one active and inactive scenic lighthouses that dot the state's

shores and remind us of our state's rich nautical heritage; and

     WHEREAS, Located in Upper Narragansett Bay, the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is a

stately beacon that has guided and protected Mariners since 1871, and is considered a great

source of pride for the city and residents of East Providence; and

     WHEREAS, The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the American Lighthouse

Foundation are organizations dedicated to the preservation, educational interpretation, and

promotion of America's lighthouse heritage; and

     WHEREAS, On April 17th of 2010, the deed transfer of the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse

from ExxonMobil to The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the American Lighthouse

Foundation will be celebrated; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby joins the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse in celebrating and

applauding ExxonMobil's generous donation and deed transfer of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse to

the American Lighthouse Foundation; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse.
