H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CREATING A SPECIAL HOUSE COMMISSION TO STUDY THE DESIGN OF A KOREAN WAR MONUMENT AT THE STATE HOUSE

     WHEREAS, The Korean War commenced on June 25, 1950, when the North Korean

Army invaded the Republic of South Korea; and  

     WHEREAS, The United States defended South Korea with 2.5 million men and women

from our armed forces; and  

     WHEREAS, Between 1950 and 1953, 54,246 members of the United States armed forces

sacrificed their lives; and 

     WHEREAS, Many Rhode Islanders risked life and limb during the Korean War; and 

     WHEREAS, To honor those who served, the General Assembly enacted R.I.G.L. §37-8-

6.1 in 1985, directing the Director of the Department of Administration to establish and display in

the State House, a monument commemorating the sacrifice of the men and women who served in

the armed forces of the United States during the Korean War; now, therefore be it  

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the service and commitment of the men and women

who served during the Korean War; and be it further  

     RESOLVED, That a special legislative commission be and the same is hereby created

consisting of five (5) members: five (5) of whom shall be veterans of the Korean War, to be

appointed by the Speaker of the House. 

     Vacancies in said commission shall be filled in like manner as the original appointment. 

     The purpose of said commission shall be to make a comprehensive study of proposals for

the design of a Korean War Monument to be located in the Rhode Island State House.  

     Forthwith upon passage of this resolution, the members of the commission shall meet at

the call of the Speaker of the House and organize and shall select from among its members a

chairperson.  

     The membership of said commission shall receive no compensation for their services.

     All departments and agencies of the state shall furnish such advice and information,

documentary and otherwise, to said commission and its agents as is deemed necessary or

desirable by the commission to facilitate the purposes of this resolution. 

     The Speaker of the House is hereby authorized and directed to provide suitable quarters

for said commission; and be it further 

     RESOLVED, That the commission shall report its findings and recommendations to the

     House of Representatives no later than March 31, 2011, and said commission shall expire on July

24, 2011.
