H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

IN SUPPORT OF THE COLON CANCER ALLIANCE'S EFFORTS IN THE PREVENTION, EARLY DETECTION, AND

TREATMENT OF COLON CANCER

     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum. If discovered

early, it is highly treatable. Sadly, it is still the second leading cancer killer in the United States;

and  

     WHEREAS, For men, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer after prostate

and lung cancers, and for women, it is the third most common cancer after breast and lung

cancers; and

      WHEREAS, The Colon Cancer Alliance was founded in 1999 by a group of forty-two

men and women. Its commendable mission is to end the suffering and death caused by colorectal

cancer; and

     WHEREAS, Utilizing the four “guiding principles” of patient support, education,

research, and advocacy, the Colon Cancer Alliance has initiated myriad programs to “increase

screening rates and survivorship by providing support and education and furthering research and

advocacy efforts”; and

     WHEREAS, It has been estimated that more than 80 percent of all cases of colorectal

cancer could be prevented with recommended screening, and that as many as 30,000 lives could

be saved each year; now, therefore be it

      RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby extends our support and gratitude to the Colon Cancer Alliance for

all its efforts in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of colon cancer. We furthermore

encourage all the citizens of this state to utilize the resources available through the Colon Cancer

Alliance and recognize the value of educating themselves on this important health issue; and be it

further

      RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Andrew Spiegel, CEO of the Colon Cancer

Alliance.
