H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE DAVID A. SEGAL FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, To the immense good fortune of the people of Providence and East

Providence, David Segal chose a life path that incorporated his aspirations and his extensive

aptitude for public service; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Segal was first elected to public office in 2002, when he

successfully ran as a Green Party candidate for a seat on the Providence City Council. He was

the youngest and first Green candidate, and served four years on the council before being elected

on November 7th of 2006 to the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, representing

District 2; and

     WHEREAS, Over the past four years, Representative Segal has lent his youth and

enthusiasm to a myriad of legislative committees. He is a member of the House Committee on

Environment and Natural Resources, and the House Committee on Judiciary. He was formerly a

member of the House Committee on Corporations; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Segal received his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from

Columbia University. Upon graduation, he worked as a teacher, tutor, and freelance journalist.

Currently, he is a researcher and paralegal for a consumer rights attorney; and

     WHEREAS, Focusing on his passion for social justice, improved environment, and good

government, Representative Segal has been a driving force behind probation reform, “cracking

down” on predatory lending practices, broadening the state’s list of hate crimes, calling for the

withdrawal of the Rhode Island National Guard from Iraq, supporting domestic partner funeral

rights, and enacting renewable energy legislation; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Segal’s commitment to the community and tireless devotion

to the citizens of the Ocean State have earned him our unqualified admiration and respect, and he

will most assuredly be missed; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby joins the family and many friends of Representative David Segal

in recognizing and celebrating his inspirational career of service to the people of the State of

Rhode Island. We, moreover, wish him continued success, happiness, and fulfillment in all his

future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable David Segal.
