H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE PETER F. KILMARTIN FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Peter F. Kilmartin has served with honor and distinction in

the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the past twenty years, as the Representative for

what is now District 61, representing the citizens of the Pawtucket community; and

      WHEREAS, Laying the perfect foundation to take on future challenges of serving the

people of Rhode Island in law enforcement, the legal profession, and the state’s legislature,

Representative Kilmartin graduated from Tolman High School, and received his Bachelor of

Science and Juris Doctor degrees from Roger Williams University; and

      WHEREAS, Winning his first foray into politics, The Honorable Peter Kilmartin was

originally elected to the Rhode Island General Assembly to represent District 80 in November of

1990. Redistricting in 2002 changed his district to the 61st; and

     WHEREAS, Held in the highest esteem by his colleagues, Representative Kilmartin was

first named House Deputy Majority Leader, and in 2004, House Majority Whip. In addition, he

has been a member of the House Committee on Corporations, the House Committee on Labor,

the House Committee on Rules, and the Joint Committee on Highway Safety; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Kilmartin has been instrumental in enacting and advocating

for numerous pieces of landmark legislation, including making Rhode Islands roadways safer

through legislation to ban texting while driving. He sponsored “pay-to-play” legislation that is

aimed at bolstering the protection, safety, and security of everyday Rhode Islanders by fighting

corporate influence. He also initiated legislation to provide tax incentives for alternative fuels,

help cities and towns collect taxes and fees on foreclosed property, and enable cities and towns to

create property tax deferment programs to help senior citizens stay in their homes; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to long hours on the House floor, Representative Kilmartin has

devoted himself to working on issues vital to this state, including co-chairing the Special

Legislative Commission studying the potential economic opportunities in the development of port

facilities in the state, and working on measures to keep Rhode Island on the forefront of green

energy initiatives; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Kilmartin has achieved approbation for myriad

achievements, including being honored by the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities and

presented with the John E. Fogarty Memorial Award for his efforts in enacting laws to improve

and enhance the lives of Rhode Island’s disabled residents; and

     WHEREAS, There is an old saying that if you want something done right, ask a busy

person. Peter Kilmartin epitomizes a busy man. In addition to the time he spends at the State

House, Representative Kilmartin is happily married to his lovely wife, Kristine, was a detective

with the Pawtucket Police Department, and has been a practicing attorney for more than two

decades; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Kilmartin’s civic and community involvement includes

membership in numerous local and professional groups. He has been a member of the Board of

Incorporators for the Memorial Hospital and Board of Directors for the Pawtucket Armory

Associates; Trustee for the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club; Member of the Pawtucket Elks,

Pawtucket Jaycees, Pawtucket Police Association, the Knights of Columbus, Rhode Island Police

Officers Emerald Society, Save the Bay, and the Smithsonian Associates; and

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Peter F. Kilmartin has brought wisdom, legal erudition, and

a tremendous work ethic to the General Assembly during his years in office. His service to the

citizens of Pawtucket, and the state, has ultimately made Rhode Island a far better place to live

and flourish; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby honors and thanks Representative Peter F. Kilmartin for twenty

years of dedicated service enriching the quality of life for all the citizens of Rhode Island. We

wish him the very best health, happiness, and much success in all his future endeavors; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Peter F. Kilmartin.
