S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

THANKING SENATOR CHARLES J. LEVESQUE FOR HIS SIX YEARS OF

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE RHODE ISLAND SENATE AND SIXTEEN YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE RHODE ISLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Introduced By: Senators McCaffrey, Paiva-Weed, Connors, Algiere, and Jabour

     Date Introduced: December 02, 2010

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque is a graduate of Portsmouth High School, the University

of Rhode Island, and Loyola University School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque began his distinguished political career in 1988, when he

was elected to the Portsmouth Town Council, where he served for four years; and

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque was first elected to the Rhode Island General Assembly in

1992, when he was elected to serve in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, where he

served for ten years. In 2004, Senator Levesque was elected to serve in the Rhode Island Senate.

He currently represents Bristol and Portsmouth, is Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on

Judiciary, and is a member of the Senate Committees on Government Oversight and Health &

Human Services; and

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque has stood out in the legislature as an eloquent and

passionate defender of our civil liberties and of the poor, frail, and disenfranchised. He has fought

tirelessly to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, to reduce hospital errors, to improve the quality

of care our seniors receive in long-term care and assisted-living facilities, and to create an Elder

Justice Division within the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office to better protect our seniors

and prosecute those who would steal from, and physically harm senior citizens; and

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque has also been a leader in the fight against predatory

lending and in finding ways to help those struggling to pay their mortgages in these hard

economic times. He has fought to create a moratorium on foreclosures in order to better

investigate the lending procedures that helped to create this crisis, and to help homeowners to

renegotiate their mortgages with banks and lenders; and

WHEREAS, Senator Levesque’s absence at Judiciary meetings will result in much

shorter hearings, but his presence will be dearly missed by Senators Perry and Goodwin. Senator

Levesque’s vast knowledge of the sport of basketball will also be sorely missed and his absence

will create a void in the all-important roundtable sports talk discussions with Senators Metts and

Jabour; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby thanks Senator Charles J. Levesque for his many years of devoted service to the Rhode

Island Senate, the Rhode Island General Assembly, and to the citizens of Rhode Island. We will

miss his good humor and passion for social justice and improving the lives of those who are weak

and in need. We wish Senator Levesque continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it

further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Senator Charles J. Levesque.
