HONORING SENATOR DANIEL P. CONNORS FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Introduced By: Senators Goodwin, Paiva-Weed, Ruggerio, Algiere, and DaPonte

     Date Introduced: December 02, 2010

WHEREAS, It is with regret and sadness that we bid adieu to our good friend and

colleague, The Honorable Daniel P. Connors, who is retiring from the General Assembly after

fourteen years of devoted service in the Rhode Island Senate; and

WHEREAS, Senator Connors was sworn in as the Rhode Island Senator from District 19

on January 7th of 1997. He was a 20-year old college junior when elected to serve the people of

Cumberland and Lincoln and it was widely believed that the only means of transportation he

owned was a skateboard; and

WHEREAS, Veteran members of this chamber will recall the great relief when, during

Senator Connors' 21st birthday party, held in Senate Majority Leader Paul Kelly's office, replete

with cake, balloons, and party hats, he could finally join in for an "adult beverage;" and

WHEREAS, Senator Connors has been thought to be one of the brightest members of the

State Senate, but his laid back manner has earned him the title of "Forrest Gump" on occasion;

and

WHEREAS, Having earned the respect of his peers for his tremendous diligence and

tenacity in 2008, Connors was elected by his colleagues to serve as Senate Majority Leader. He

previously served as Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate and was Chairman of the

Committee on Labor and Chairman of the Committee on Rules. He also served as a member of

several other Senate committees, including the Committee on Government Oversight, the

Committee on Finance, and the Committee on Judiciary; and

WHEREAS, He currently serves as Chairman-elect of the New England Board of Higher

Education, and previously served as chairman of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority Board

of Directors and as a member of the Rhode Island State Investment Commission; and

WHEREAS, Majority Leader Connors has been a tenacious advocate on behalf of

protecting our children and the general public from sex offenders. At the request of Leader

Connors, the General Assembly passed legislation that requires sex offenders before they leave

prison to be classified by the proper authorities, thereby making sure neighbors in a community

will receive advanced notification before a registered sex offender moves into their community;

and

WHEREAS, Senator Connors was also a leader in the fight to pass “Frank’s Law,” a law

that saves lives by making it safer for bicyclists to share the road with motor vehicles; and

WHEREAS, Senate Majority Leader Daniel P. Connors was presented with a

“Legislative Champion” award at the Seventh Annual Earth Day Breakfast of Champions event

on April 24, 2010. He was recognized for “his leadership in the movement to protect our

environment and our health,” and for his stalwart support for public transportation in Rhode

Island; and

WHEREAS, Senator Connors’ leadership and tireless devotion to the citizens of the

Ocean State has earned our unqualified admiration and respect, and he will most assuredly be

missed; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby honors Senator Daniel P. Connors as he concludes his service to the Rhode Island General

Assembly and to the people of this state. We thank him for a job well done, and extend our

sincere wishes for his family and his continued health, happiness, and success; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Daniel P. Connors.
