A N A C T

RELATING TO DAYS OF SPECIAL OBSERVANCE

          

     Introduced By: Representatives Messier, E Coderre, Johnston, San Bento, and JP 

                               O`Neill

     Date Introduced: March 30, 2011   

 

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

 

     WHEREAS, In 1977, Ben Mondor purchased a failing minor league baseball franchise in

Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He soon transformed both team and stadium into a thriving fan and

family-friendly venue; and

     WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure at the helm of the PawSox, Ben Mondor won acclaim

and admiration not only for his professional successes with the PawSox franchise, but also for his

vision, drive, and community involvement; and

     WHEREAS, The impact and legacy Ben Mondor left on the game of baseball are

nationally renowned and there is no doubt that he left this state a far better place because of his

life's endeavors; and

     WHEREAS, Ben Mondor will forever hold a place of honor in the sport of baseball and

in Rhode Island's history, but perhaps his greatest gift can be found in the eyes of fans young and

old alike, on any game night at McCoy Stadium.

 

     SECTION 1. Chapter 25-2 of the General Laws entitled "Days of Special Observance" is

hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

 

     25-2-53. Ben Mondor Day. Opening Day of the Pawtucket Red Sox shall annually be

set apart as a day to be known as "Ben Mondor Day." The day shall be observed by the people of

this state with appropriate ceremonies and activities that celebrate the many contributions Ben

Mondor made.

 

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
