H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

COMMEMORATING THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH

     WHEREAS, In the 1800s, America was truly a land of opportunity and freedom. French-

Canadians and Irish immigrants in the mid-1800s, and Italian immigrants in the late 1800s and

early 1900s, flocked to the United States, making their way to Rhode Island. Many eventually

settled in Westerly; and

     WHEREAS, These strong and faithful men and women from Ireland, Italy, and Quebec

composed the original congregation of the Immaculate Conception Church. The church was

founded on January 21st of 1886, under the devout leadership of Reverend William Pyne; and

     WHEREAS, In March of 1886, land for the church was purchased, and in September of

that year, the cornerstone was laid and blessed with more than 2,000 parishioners and friends in

attendance; and   

     WHEREAS, Over the next twelve and a half decades, the Immaculate Conception

Church continued to grow, seeing relocations, new additions, and numerous improvements. 

Currently blessed by the outstanding and devout leadership of Reverend Wilfrid G. Gregoire, the

parish continues to flourish, providing for the spiritual needs of the surrounding community; and

     WHEREAS, This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the founding of Immaculate

Conception Church. This momentous occasion represents a major milestone for the church’s

congregation and is to be commemorated with a year-long celebration giving thanks to God for

His many blessings; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the congregation and ministry of the Immaculate

Conception Church on its joyous 125th Anniversary, and wishes them continued spiritual success

and many more years of community enrichment and service; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Reverend Wilfrid G. Gregoire, Pastor of the

Immaculate Conception Church.
