H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING "NATIONAL LIBRARY DAY" ON APRIL 14, 2011, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, In the nineteenth century, Henry Ward Beecher said, “A library is not a

luxury, but one of the necessities of life.”  Surely, that sentiment is as true today as it was almost

two hundred years ago; and

     WHEREAS, Across our great country, there are thousands of public, academic, school,

governmental, and specialized libraries that provide excellent and invaluable services to library

users regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background; and

     WHEREAS, Libraries supply millions of people with the knowledge and information

they need to live, learn, and work in the 21st Century.  They impart entertainment, allow readers

to journey to far-off lands and long-ago times, and endow students with the tools they will need to

succeed; and

     WHEREAS, National Library Day is a time to recognize the benefits and lifelong

enrichment that libraries supply to students and residents in our communities.  It is also a day to

honor the contributions of all library workers, including librarians, support staff, and others who

make library services possible; and

     WHEREAS, Librarians and library support staff bring our nation a world of knowledge

both in person and online, as well as provide personal service and expert assistance in finding

what is needed when it is needed; and

     WHEREAS, In the immortal words of Dr. Suess, “The more that you read, the more

things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you'll go”; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby celebrates “National Library Day" on April 14th of 2011.  We

furthermore extend a warm thank you to all library workers for their exceptional contributions to

Rhode Island’s communities; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Library Association.
