S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

URGING ALL DRIVERS IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND TO SHARE THE ROAD WITH MOTORCYCLISTS

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators Moura, Shibley, and Pinga

     WHEREAS, Motorcycles are efficient vehicles that reduce fuel consumption, require less

parking space, ease traffic congestion, and are becoming increasingly popular for commuting,

tourism, and recreational purposes; and

     WHEREAS, Motorcycles provide a unique vantage point from which to enjoy Rhode

Island's natural, historical, and cultural resources; and

     WHEREAS, Increased awareness and safe driving procedures by all vehicle operators

can help assure the safety of and reduce injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists; and

     WHEREAS, It is especially important that all drivers in Rhode Island be aware of

motorcycles on the highways and streets and recognize the need to share the road with these

vulnerable vehicles; and

     WHEREAS, Motorcycle organizations, clubs, and dealerships, the Rhode Island Division

of Motor Vehicles, and the Rhode Island State Police have worked together to promote safe

operation, increased rider training and education, improved licensing procedures, and improved

motorist awareness; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

encourages all drivers to unite in the safe sharing of roadways throughout the State; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate urges all drivers to increase their awareness of

motorcycles and to practice safe and proper operation of all motor vehicles among motorcyclists;

and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lisa S. Holley, Administrator of the Rhode

Island Division of Motor Vehicles.
