S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER, 2011, AS "PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"

IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators E O`Neill, Pinga, Ottiano, Bates, and DiPalma

     WHEREAS, During the month of November, volunteers from organizations across the

country will be holding various events to amplify awareness about the urgent need to augment

research on finding early detection methods, effective treatment options, and, ultimately, a cure

for pancreatic cancer: and

     WHEREAS, Difficult to detect and treat and the fourth leading cause of cancer in the

United States, pancreatic cancer kills more than 266,000 people a year worldwide and devastates

the family and friends left behind; and

     WHEREAS, There have been no significant improvements in survival rates in the last 40

years, and with only a 6 percent five-year survival rate in the United States, a diagnosis of

pancreatic cancer is desperately grim; and

     WHEREAS, An increase in public awareness and research on this intolerably deadly

disease is urgently needed; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims the month of November, 2011, to be “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in

the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate urges the citizens of the state to support awareness and

research on this disease and join volunteers from across the state at the 2nd Annual Purple Light

Vigil to be held at the Rhode Island State House on November 20th of 2011; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
