S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE WEEK BEGINNING ON APRIL 2, 2012, TO BE "APRIL FRIENDS

WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The impact of bullying and cyberbullying has been given greater attention

in recent months due to the suicides of several bullied teens from around the country; and

     WHEREAS, With the widespread use of social networking websites and text messaging,

bullying is no longer limited to the classroom and school playgrounds; and

     WHEREAS, According to the 2010 SurveyWorks! administered by the Rhode Island

Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE), over 15,000 Rhode Island middle

school students reported that they had experienced some form of bullying during that year; and

     WHEREAS, According to RIDE, last year nearly 11,000 Rhode Island high school

students admitted that had been involved in a bullying incident; now therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

recognizes that the prevention of bullying and cyberbullying is important to the education and

overall health of our youth; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby urges all citizens of the state to join us in

acknowledging and celebrating the admirable efforts of those Rhode Island school children who

have chosen to stand up to state that bullying will not be tolerated and who have done so in a

peaceful and respectful manner; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby proclaims the week beginning on April 2, 2012, to

be “April Friend’s Week” and urges all citizens of the state to join in spreading awareness of the

dangers of bullying and cyberbullying.
