S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING MAY 13TH - 19TH, 2012, AS "NATIONAL NURSING HOME WEEK" IN

THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The citizens of Rhode Island now residing in nursing homes have

contributed immeasurably to the heritage, success, and growth of our communities; and

     WHEREAS, Residents of nursing homes include the elderly and young adults with

physical or mental disabilities who require physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative

therapies following an accident or illness; and

     WHEREAS, Nursing home residents of any age or ability are often living history and

always a precious resource; and 

     WHEREAS, The decision to put a loved one into a nursing home is often difficult. The

hope is to find a tranquil place, operated by caring and well-trained staff members, who assist

residents in their recuperation or in receiving the type of extra care that their families cannot

provide; and  

     WHEREAS, Guided by this year’s national theme of “Celebrating the Journey,” member

nursing homes of the American Health Care Association and the Rhode Island Health Care

Association are holding events across the state in observance of Nursing Home Week; and

     WHEREAS, This year’s “Nursing Home Week” begins on Mother’s Day, May 13th, and

concludes on May 19th; now, therefore be it 

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby celebrates May 13th – 19th, 2012, as National Nursing Home Week. We urge all the

citizens of our state to honor elderly and disabled residents of nursing homes by visiting or

volunteering at a local nursing home in order to endow the residents with community spirit and to

show appreciation to the staff who care for our beloved citizens on our behalf; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Joan Woods, Chair of the Rhode Island Health

Care Association, and Danielle Sylvestre, Activities Director for Waterview Villa.
