CELEBRATING
"NATIONAL HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH"
DURING THE MONTH
OF MAY, 2012, IN THE STATE OF

WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease (HD) is a hereditary and degenerative brain disorder
for which there is currently no treatment or cure; and
WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability
to
walk, talk, and reason; and
WHEREAS, One out of
every ten thousand Americans will be diagnosed with
Huntington’s Disease, resulting in more than 30,000 people in the
with this disease; and
WHEREAS, Children who
have a parent diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease have
a
50/50 chance of inheriting the malady, which means at
least 200,000 Americans are at risk of
developing HD; and
WHEREAS, Children who
develop the juvenile form of Huntington’s Disease
rarely live
to adulthood; and
WHEREAS, Eventually, every person afflicted by Huntington’s Disease
will require full-
time care; and
WHEREAS, The goals of Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month are to
raise public
awareness and to educate all Rhode Islanders about Huntington’s
Disease; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby fully endorses the month of May, 2012, as “National Huntington’s
Disease Awareness Month” in
the State of
RESOLVED,
That this House hereby commemorates the 21st
Anniversary of the signing
of Federal Proclamation 6295, which designated the month
of May in 1991 as National HD
Awareness
Month. We further support
the educational goals brought forth by this resolution and
urge all the citizens of our state to wear the color blue
to signify remembrance of
Disease awareness; and be
it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the
Huntington’s Disease Society of
Inc.,
