S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 27, 2013, AS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC INDEPENDENCE

DAY IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Senate to commemorate historical events which

exemplify the spirit and struggle of people throughout our state and the world to achieve

independence and live in peace and freedom; and

     WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing

traditions, this Senate is justly proud to commemorate the 169th Anniversary of the Dominican

Republic Independence, to be celebrated on February 27, 2013; and

     WHEREAS, The people of the Dominican Republic acquired their independence from

Spain on February 27, 1844; and

     WHEREAS, Every year, this auspicious occasion is celebrated and provides an

opportunity for all people to reflect upon the rich history of the Dominican Republic and the

many contributions of Latin Americans to our country, as well as the world; and

     WHEREAS, February 27th has been designated as Dominican Independence Day in the

State of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, Dominicans have brought great contributions to our State and Nation.

Dominicans have demonstrated their success as National League Baseball stars, as the inspiration

of high fashion, such as the legendary Oscar de la Renta, and as thousands of soldiers, doctors,

lawyers, journalists, educators, and public servants who work every day to improve their world;

and

     WHEREAS, Those who enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have

shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recognition and

applause of all the citizens of this great Ocean State; now, therefore, be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby recognizes the 169th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic Independence to be

celebrated on February 27, 2013. We urge all Rhode Islanders to recognize the importance of

acknowledging the contributions of Dominicans and Dominican Americans to Rhode Island and

the United States; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to various Dominican organizations in the State of

Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation.
