H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

IN SUPPORT OF THE PRUDENCE ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUM

     WHEREAS, The Prudence Island Historical and Preservation Society was established in

1983 with the goal of collecting and preserving the history of Prudence Island for current Rhode

Islanders, as well as for members of future generations; and

     WHEREAS, The Prudence Island Historical Museum houses an array of over 4,000 items

that have been donated over the years to the community of Prudence Island and that attest to the

lives of everyday Rhode Islanders throughout our state’s history; and

     WHEREAS, The Portsmouth Town Council, at its February 11, 2013, meeting signaled

its support for exempting the Prudence Island Historical and Preservation Society from real and

personal property tax as long as the property is used for nonprofit purposes; and

     WHEREAS, It is imperative that Rhode Island nurtures the nonprofit organizations that

contribute to the Ocean State’s rich heritage and identity; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the importance of historical preservation sites like the

Prudence Island Historical Museum. We commend the museum’s committed leadership and staff,

as well as the support demonstrated by the Portsmouth Town Council, for taking steps to preserve

our shared history; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. James Seveney, President of the

Portsmouth Town Council.
