CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE TOWN OF

WEST WARWICK

Introduced By: Representatives Nunes, Serpa, and Morgan

     Date Introduced: March 14, 2013

WHEREAS, West Warwick was incorporated in 1913 and holds the distinction of being

the youngest town in Rhode Island; and

WHEREAS, As with many of Rhode Island's towns, West Warwick began as the home

of successful mills, mostly located on the Pawtuxet River, that produced textiles for clothing and

good employment opportunities for the community that developed nearby; and

WHEREAS, West Warwick's thriving local economy during the 19th and 20th centuries

brought with it the influx of many diverse cultures and citizens of different nationalities, resulting

in the formation of many villages which still exist today, including Arctic, Centerville, Crompton,

Riverpoint, Natick, and Phenix; and

WHEREAS, While the town's mills slowly closed over the succeeding years, today, those

beautiful castle-like structures are finding new uses and revitalized purposes, and families and

neighbors from the multi-cultural villages of West Warwick are proud of their heritage and small

town friendly atmosphere; and

WHEREAS, West Warwick is fortunate to have so many historical sites, as well as

geographic and natural resources upon which to build. Today, the town is the 10th largest out of

thirty-nine cities and towns in Rhode Island and with continued dedication, insight, and planning,

the 21st century looks to be full of promise and prosperity; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby commemorates the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the

founding of the Town of West Warwick; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this House hereby extends our gratitude and best wishes to those who

live in and serve the Town of West Warwick; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to David Gosselin, Jr., President of the West

Warwick Town Council.
