S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING APRIL 7TH THROUGH APRIL 13TH OF 2013 TO BE

"BARBERSHOP HARMONY WEEK"

IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

 

 

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators Goodwin, Paiva Weed, Gallo, Lynch, and Lombardi

     WHEREAS, On April 11, 1938, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, O. C. Cash and Rupert Hall formed

the "Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in

America."  This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the organization's founding; and

     WHEREAS, The society, which was known by its acronym, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., adopted

the alternate name of the "Barbershop Harmony Society" early in its history, although it did not

legally change its official brand name until 2004; and

     WHEREAS, Originally consisting of twenty-six men who shared an interest in a cappella

singing, today, the Barbershop Harmony Society has almost 25,000 members in 800 chapters

across our nation and in Canada's ten provinces.  Here in Rhode Island, members of the society

are not only numerous, but also talented, producing an International Quartet Champion and

International Seniors Quartet Champion; and

     WHEREAS, Featuring the iconic vocal harmony of consonant four-part chords, the

melodious renderings of barbershop quartets are a truly American musical art form; and

     WHEREAS, The Barbershop Harmony Society has produced quartets that have gifted

generations of music lovers with the "magical fifth note" and encouraged world harmony through

our universal love of music; now, therefore be it  

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims April 7th through April 13th of 2013 to be "Barbershop Harmony Week."  We

furthermore encourage all the people of our state to seek out and enjoy the inspiring musical

stylings and melodious accomplishments of Barbershop Harmony; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Steve Isherwood, Alan F. Lamson, President,

Barbershop Harmony Society, and Martin L. Monson, CEO/Executive Director, Barbershop

Harmony Society.
