H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 16TH OF 2013 TO BE "STEP FAMILY DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Founded by Christy Borgeld in 1997, National Step Family Day is

celebrated annually on September 16th. It is a day to honor all the “StepHeroes” who choose to be

parents to all the children in their lives; and

     WHEREAS, In the United States, one out of every three people live in a step family and

more than fifty percent of all Americans will be involved in some form of step family relationship

at some point in their lives; and

     WHEREAS, Sometimes called a “blended” or a reconstituted family, thirty percent of

America’s children are growing up in families in which either one or both members of a couple

have children from their previous relationships; and

     WHEREAS, Forming healthy relationships and strong family structures is crucial to a

child’s development and individual growth; and

     WHEREAS, Celebration of this day gives stepparents, their children, and individual

family members some much deserved recognition for the value and strength they provide to the

very fabric of our society; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims September 16, 2013, to be "Step Family Day" in our

state. We furthermore urge all families to celebrate this day by spending time with the special

people in their lives.
