H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

DECLARING TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 2014, AS "NO MORE DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island is home to an estimated 205,000 victims, both male and female, who, during their lifetimes, experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner; and

WHEREAS, Domestic violence in Rhode Island poses a major public health crisis, not only for the significant others who fall victim to these horrific acts, but also for the children who suffer through the experience; and

WHEREAS, In 2011, Rhode Island police officers responded to 7,883 domestic violence related calls, and children were present in almost 2,100 of these incidents; and

WHEREAS, All too often, there are many more of these heinous crimes that don't get reported because of victims' fear, a threat from the guilty spouse, or, in some cases, because of death resulting from the crime; and

WHEREAS, "NO MORE Day" serves as a symbol of commitment to ending domestic violence and sexual assault in Rhode Island and across the nation; and

WHEREAS, "NO MORE Day" will also serve as a national symbol to bring awareness to issues of domestic violence and sexual assault that all too often get overlooked; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby recognizes March 11, 2014, as "NO MORE Day," a day that will be known as the nation's call to end domestic violence and sexual assault; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to submit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
