S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 3, 2014 AS "RHODE ISLAND OPEN TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIP DAY"

WHEREAS, Taekwondo is a traditional Korean Martial Art that provides an exceptional cardio workout and improves coordination. Its foundation is "about mental discipline, confidence, balance, and harmony"; and

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship was initiated by Grandmaster Jin Sup Hong. This year's event marks the thirtieth anniversary of the competition; and

WHEREAS, The Taekwondo Championship has been an outstanding feature of the martial arts sport in Rhode Island and features Demo Team Competition, forms competitions, board breaking, and sparring; and

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship has significant stature as a tournament in the New England area and has hosted thousands of Rhode Island competitors over the years; and

WHEREAS, More than just a martial arts self-defense, Taekwondo is studied and enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, provides benefits to both participant and spectator, and enriches the cultural diversity of our state; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaiming May 3, 2014 as "Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship Day." We furthermore encourage all the state's residents to join in the celebration of the numerous benefits of Taekwondo on this day; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Grand Master Hong, President of Grandmaster Hong's World Class Taekwondo Center.
