S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2014, TO BE THE "MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD" IN RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, Celebrating April as the "Month of the Military Child" began in 1986 when then United States Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designated this event as a way to honor the contributions and sacrifices our nation's military children make to our nation; and

WHEREAS, There are more than two million men and women bravely serving in the Armed Forces of the United States and approximately 44 percent of them leave families and children behind at home when they are deployed overseas. Most children of military families will attend six to nine different schools from kindergarten through high school, including attending, on average, two different high schools. It is the children, more than anyone else, who feel the effects of these deployments and we all owe them a debt of gratitude for a sacrifice that can never be fully repaid; and

WHEREAS, The Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission strives to ease the burden of these transitions for the children of military families in order that they may have the same educational and enrichment opportunities as all other students; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the nation during the week of April 14-18 of 2014, communities across America will be taking time to "Purple up! For military kids." Everyone is being encourage to wear purple items on a specific day that week to show support and appreciation for military kids and to thank them for the sacrifices they make, and will continue to make, in support of our nation; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby declares the Month of April of 2014, to be the "Month of the Military Child" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

RESOLVED; That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rosemary K. Kraeger, Commissioner, Rhode Island Military Interstate Children's Compact.
