H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF MAY 5TH THROUGH MAY 10TH 2014, TO BE "THE RHODE ISLAND BROTHERHOOD OF CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WEEK"

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers consists of approximately 1,300 highly trained, professional and dedicated public servants guarding approximately 3,200 inmates on a daily basis, many of whom are violent and dangerous. They protect the public and are responsible for the prisoner's custody, care and reform. They work tirelessly and diligently in a stressful and demanding environment where every day at work has the potential to instantly become a very dangerous place for any correctional officer; and

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers was started approximately forty years ago in the wake of a scandal-ridden environment in Rhode Island in which a poorly run prison system was a perpetually dangerous environment for the guards, administrators and the prisoners themselves, as well as a national embarrassment to the citizens of Rhode Island. Today, thanks to Rhode Island's leadership and the many hard working men and women devoted to creating and maintaining a secure and safe prison system in Rhode Island, our state has one of the very best prison systems in the nation; and

WHEREAS, As Rhode Island citizens go about their daily business, we should never forget, and be eternally grateful to, the brave and diligent men and women of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers who guard Rhode Island's inmates and ensure that none of those incarcerated inmates will pose a danger to the general public; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the week of May 5th through May 10th, 2014, to be "Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers Week" in Rhode Island; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Richard Ferruccio, President, Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers.
