H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING "ADVOCACY DAY" ON MAY 22ND OF 2014, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, Annually, the American Lung Association of the Northeast hosts Advocacy Day at the Rhode Island State House; and

WHEREAS, The American Lung Association of the Northeast is part of the American Lung Association, which is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States. The organization's mission is "to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease"; and

WHEREAS, The noble purpose of the Lung Association's Advocacy Day is to highlight the myriad efforts throughout the state that focus attention and promote "healthy air and healthy lungs." In addition, the organization provides information on various priorities to promote its initiatives; and

WHEREAS, The Lung Association also presents the "Lung Health Champion" award during the day's events. This year's recipient of the award is CVS Caremark in recognition of its landmark decision to discontinue the sale of all tobacco products in all CVS/Pharmacy stores nationwide; and

WHEREAS, The Lung Association's Advocacy Day is an opportunity to enlighten and raise public awareness for the many ways we can all better our health, our lives, and our state, and it is eminently worthy of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 22, 2014, to be "Advocacy Day" in our state. We furthermore extend appreciation and applause to the CVS Caremark organization for its decision to cease the sale of tobacco products in its stores; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast, and Larry J. Merlo, President & CEO of CVS Caremark.
