S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 25, 2014, TO BE "ATAXIA AWARENESS DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Ataxia is a rare, progressive disorder of the nervous system affecting

balance and coordination; and

WHEREAS, An estimated 150,000 individuals are affected by hereditary and sporadic

ataxia in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, Ataxia is an often fatal degenerative neurological disorder that affects

balance, coordination and speech; and

WHEREAS, Ataxia can strike anyone at any time, without regard to age, gender, race or

creed; and

     WHEREAS, There is no known cure for Ataxia. The only defense is research and

prevention through education; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims September 25, 2014, to be "Ataxia Awareness Day" in the State of Rhode

Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Anabela Azevedo, Rhode Island Ataxia

Support Group Leader.
