S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
EXPRESSING SUPPORT AND UNITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE AND EXTENDING PROFOUND SYMPATHIES TO THE FAMILIES OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE TRAGIC TERRORISTS ATTACKS IN PARIS, FRANCE

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the unspeakable
attacks that have taken the lives of seventeen innocent people in France; and
     WHEREAS, In the worst terrorist assault to occur in France in more than 50 years, a
three-day killing spree by radical Islamists began on Wednesday, January 7th, 2015, resulting in
bloodshed at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, a deadly hostage drama in a Jewish
supermarket on Friday, and at other sites around Paris; and
     WHEREAS, The entire world looked on, with empathy for the plight of the innocent
individuals and their families, and with support for police and leaders in France who were trying
desperately to understand, cope with, and put an end to the nightmarish ordeal; and
     WHEREAS, Around the world, when the enemies of freedom perpetrate horrific acts of
violence against innocent people, the nations and people of the free world will not be divided by
fear or religious differences but rather, we will reaffirm our hopes and commitment to living in
peace and respecting each other despite any differences; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby stands with the French people and all free and just people around the world with support
and unity in the fight to defend and uphold freedom of the press and against terrorist acts; and be
it further
     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby offers our deepest sympathy and prayers to the
families and friends of the seventeen lives lost during the tragic events in France; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the President of France François Hollande,
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the office of Charlie Hebdo.
