S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING JANUARY 17, 2015 TO BE "SHINE A LIGHT ON HEROIN DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND, AND COMMENDING WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND AND STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT FOR THEIR JOINT EFFORTS TO COMBAT THIS CRISIS

     WHEREAS, The heroin crisis that has gripped so many cities and towns in our nation,
has caused irreparable harm and grief in the lives of many Americans. Recently, community
activists and leaders in Westerly, Rhode Island, and Stonington, Connecticut, have been working
tirelessly to combat this deadly epidemic at the local levels; and
     WHEREAS, A nascent movement that began with approximately fifteen members has
grown to fifty members through the power of community action and social media. Local residents
have been volunteering their time, organizing fundraising events and educating the community
about the dangers the heroin crisis presents to their community; and
     WHEREAS, On January 17th of 2015, "Shine a Light on Heroin Day" will be
commemorated in Westerly and Stonington. Thanks to the support of community volunteers, the
local police departments and first responders, and several local businesses, many people will be
educated about the danger of heroin to their community, and lives may be saved as a result of
these efforts; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby proclaims January 17, 2015, to be "Shine a Light on Heroin Day" in Rhode Island.
Furthermore, we congratulate the communities of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Stonington,
Connecticut, for their actions in combating this crisis; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Westerly Town Council.
