S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING MAY 6, 2015, TO BE "MANUFACTURING DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island's Slater Mill, a wooden building completed in 1793 for the
purpose of manufacturing cotton yarn by waterpower, revolutionized industry in America. It
became the first successful factory in the United States and made Rhode Island the birthplace of
the Industrial Revolution; and
     WHEREAS, Manufacturing currently accounts for about 7.7 percent of the total
economic output for the State of Rhode Island, and in 2014, employed approximately 58,967
people which accounts for an increase of 1.5 percent over 2013 figures, and almost 9 percent of
all jobs in the state. Total manufacturing output in Rhode Island is over 4 billion dollars and
compensation for a manufacturing job in Rhode Island is close to 37 percent higher than for
nonfarm jobs; and
     WHEREAS, Manufacturing jobs today are not the same low skill jobs of the past.
Manufacturing jobs currently require people who are highly skilled, educated, innovative
thinkers, and able to adapt to rapidly changing technology and learning how to use new
equipment at a rapid pace; and
     WHEREAS, The manufacturing sector of an economy is often a leading indicator of the
relative strength or weakness of the economy at large. It is a vital component of a prosperous,
diverse and thriving economy. Manufacturing in Rhode Island is currently prospering and
growing and we should do all we can to ensure that manufacturing remains a thriving part of the
state's economy; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby proclaims May 6, 2015, to be "Manufacturing Day" in Rhode Island; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. David M. Chenevert, President, Swissline
Precision Mfg.,Inc.
