JOYOUSLY CELEBRATING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ELMWOOD ADULT DAY HEALTH CARE CENTER

Introduced By: Representatives Slater, Diaz, Hull, Williams, and Lombardi
Date Introduced: May 21, 2015

WHEREAS, On March 29, 2010, the Elmwood community welcomed the opening of the
much-needed, and much-desired, Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center. By taking over a
piece of property that had become a neighborhood eyesore, due to being vacant, in disrepair, and
suffering from frequent vandalism, and turning it into a vibrant community health center, the
Elmwood community became the beneficiaries of better access to quality health care, and reduced
criminal activity in the neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, The services provided by the center proved to be so highly in demand that a
second Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center was needed, and on April 24, 2013, a second
such community center was opened on Miner Street in Providence; and
WHEREAS, The two Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Centers provide much-needed
health care services for seniors fifty-five and older and disabled adults over the age of twenty-
one. All services are covered by Medicaid, at little to no cost to the patrons, and services are
especially encouraged for individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and memory
loss; and
WHEREAS, The Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Centers offer a myriad of health care
services targeted to improve the quality of life on a daily basis for their patrons. Services
provided included skilled nursing assistance, social services, including counseling, support
groups, and assistance in applying for benefits and services, transportation services, dietary
assistance from a registered dietician, pharmaceutical assistance and physical therapy assistance;
and
WHEREAS, The two Elmwood centers also offer a broad range of fun and therapeutic
activities that enrich and stimulate the lives of those who participate. These programs include
music and dance, exercise classes, arts and crafts projects, talent shows, birthday parties,
computer classes, singing, citizenship classes and many more similar programs; now, therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby joyously celebrates the 5th Anniversary of the Elmwood Adult
Day Health Care Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Joanne O'Day, Program Director,
Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center.
