H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
RECOGNIZING JUNE 8TH OF 2015, AS "WORLD OCEANS DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Thousands of people from across the United States and around the world
will be gathering at a panoply of events to celebrate this year's World Oceans Day on June 8,
2015; and
     WHEREAS, World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in
December of 2008, as a day of celebration and action for the world's oceans; and
     WHEREAS, Since 2002, The Ocean Project, in partnership with many other
organizations and networks, including the World Ocean Network and the Association of Zoos and
Aquariums, has been the lead organization in promoting and coordinating World Oceans Day;
and
     WHEREAS, The Ocean Project, which is based in Providence, is a nonprofit
organization that works to advance ocean and climate conservation, in partnership with a growing
global network of 2,000 aquariums, zoos, science museums, and other organizations; and
     WHEREAS, This year's theme for World Oceans Day is "Healthy oceans, healthy
planet," with many additional events geared towards educating citizens on the dangers and ways
to prevent the dangers of plastic pollution; and
     WHEREAS, Alyssa Isakower, World Oceans Day Coordinator stated, "The ocean is the
heart of our planet, and like your heart pumping blood through your body, the ocean connects all
people across our planet. People come together on World Oceans Day to celebrate that
connection, and, now more than ever, also to help solve problems like plastic trash in our ocean";
now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the 8th day of June, 2015, as "World Oceans Day" in
our state. We furthermore urge the citizens of the Ocean State to join members of The Ocean
Project in observing and celebrating this day through participation in appropriate programs and
activities; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Bill Mott, Director, The Ocean Project.
