PROCLAIMING THURSDAY, MARCH 3RD, 2016, AS "TNC DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Introduced By: Senators Pichardo, Paiva Weed, Algiere, Lombardi, and Sheehan
Date Introduced: March 03, 2016

WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1951, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), has diligently
endeavored to "conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends" and has done more to
achieve this noble mission and advance conservation, than any other organization on earth; and
WHEREAS, Through worldwide partnerships, chapters, and coalitions, The Nature
Conservancy is working to make a lasting difference in 69 countries, and has enlisted the efforts
of more than 600 scientists and spatial analysists; and
WHEREAS, In Caribbean island nations such as the Dominican Republic, fresh water, so
essential and elemental to life itself, is a very scarce resource. TNC has worked to introduce water
funds and tools to implement water conservation efforts. In 2013, two funds were established in
the Dominican Republic, one of which supports the nation's watersheds and another that focuses
on the largest river system in the country, the Yaque del Norte. The resultant benefits of these
two funds have provided 60 percent of the country's population with fresh water; and
WHEREAS, In the Ocean State, The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island's goal "is to
protect the natural character of our beautiful state." Efforts include protecting land and
freshwater, restoring healthy coastal waters, the restoration of oyster reefs and fishing habitats,
and encouraging the citizens of the state to explore and enjoy the "wonders of nature"; and
WHEREAS, Theodore Roosevelt wisely stated, "To waste, to destroy our natural
resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will
result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to
hand down to them amplified and developed"; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby proclaims Thursday, March 3rd, 2016, to be "TNC Day." We moreover recognize and
extend our sincere gratitude to those who have helped TNC to enrich our lives and build a
brighter future for generations to come; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Terry Sullivan, State Director of the Nature
Conservancy of Rhode Island.
