Date Introduced: May 11, 2017

WHEREAS, Mental health affects people regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity,
religion, or economic status and it is critical to the well-being and vitality of our families, schools,
businesses, and communities; and
WHEREAS, One in five adults and one in ten children will experience a diagnosable
mental health disorder in a given year and breakthroughs in our understanding of mental wellness
will result in more precise treatments and positive outcomes; and
WHEREAS, Together, Hasbro Children's Hospital and Bradley Hospital offer leading-
edge behavioral healthcare to children throughout New England and beyond; and
WHEREAS, In a joint effort, the ArtReach staff of the Hasbro Children's Hospital Partial
Program and the Art Therapy staff of Bradley Hospital's Center for Autism and Developmental
Disabilities Inpatient and Partial Programs, Children's Inpatient and Partial Programs, Adolescent
Inpatient and Partial Programs, and Pediatric Anxiety Research Center Partial Programs
combined their talents and resources in a collaboration that resulted in the creation of a beautiful
and poignant quilt; and
WHEREAS, The quilt is an artistic rendering of the medical and mental health struggles
that face young patients. Highlighting patients' diagnoses, pain, emotional struggles, and family
and school issues through pictures and words, the quilt gives expression and understanding of
patients whose voices and feelings often go unheard; and
WHEREAS, By displaying the quilt and recognizing "Mental Health Month" Hasbro and
Bradley help to dispel the stigma and shame that comes with a mental health or
medical/psychological diagnosis, and strive to build a brighter future for Rhode Island's children;
now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby commemorates the month of May as "Mental Health Month" and
proudly displays the collaborative artistic quilt created by patients in the Hasbro Children’s
Hospital and Bradley Hospital; and be it further
